Sponsored by the CAFSP and in collaboration with the Center for Domestic Preparedness (CDP) in Anniston, Alabama. This will be the first time this course has been delivered off site.

This 4 day course will provide a participant with specific skills to support a response to an agricultural disaster. It is a practical, hands on, exercise based course. At the conclusion of the course, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe agroterrorism and its effects on humans, animals and the economy
  • Identify chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosive hazards and relate them to potential agroterrorism
  • Demonstrate knowledge of agricultural-related epidemiology
  • Identify zoonotic diseases that may be used by terrorists
  • Identify foreign animal diseases that may be used by terrorists
  • Describe response actions for an agroterrorism event, including the role of the responder within the Incident Command System
  • Describe various methods of animal restraint and euthanasia that may be used in an agricultural incident
  • Describe various methods of animal carcass disposal
  • Demonstrate how to utilize personal protective equipment in an agricultural incident
  • Demonstrate how to perform decontamination procedures in an agricultural response
  • Demonstrate how to perform a post decontamination survey and maintain crime scene preservation

This is an excellent course and a wonderful opportunity for faculty, staff and students to experience hands on training to support a response effort to an agricultural incident. The course will run from 8-5 each day and all materials will be provided at no charge. Faculty from the UTCVM and UT Extension will be actively involved in the instruction. We will also have experts from CDP in crime scene preservation and personal protective equipment serving as instructors in the course. The classroom portion of the class and the exercises during the first three days will be offered at the UTCVM facility. The practical exercise on the fourth day will be held at Cherokee Farm.

This course will be offered for 2 hrs credit as a CEM 501 Special Topics course. 32 hours of continuing education credits can also be offered. It can be used by students enrolled in the MPH program as an elective for the VPH concentration area. Everyone who completes all course requirements will also receive a DHS certificate of completion. Course requirements are a passing grade on a test demonstrating mastery of material and satisfactory completion of the course practical exercises.

The next AGERT course will take place December 15-18, 2009. Please check back for registration details.
