The Center for Endocrine and Metabolism Research focuses upon two major equine endocrine and metabolic disorders that relate to laminitis in horses.
Insulin resistance (IR) is a condition that can be detected in adult horses of all ages. This is referred to as
equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) when associated with laminitis and obesity and/or regional adiposity (cresty neck).
Equine Cushing’s disease (ECD), which is also called pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), is an endocrine disorder that develops in older horses.
We are also examining the systemic events that contribute to the development of lameness in laminitic horses, with the hope of finding new ways to prevent this devastating disease.
