Support the Center for Equine Veterinary Research
Graduate Student Fellowships
One of the goals of the Center for Equine Veterinary Research (CEVR) is to train the next generation of equine researchers. The CEVR is trying to accomplish this goal by offering Ph.D. degree programs in clinical veterinary research. There is an urgent need for more equine research and we can only meet this demand by training students to the Ph.D. level. Veterinary schools have traditionally focused upon training veterinarians for practice, but we must also train researchers who will expand our knowledge and find new ways to diagnose and treat medical problems in animals. This is particularly important for equine science because there are many medical problems such as laminitis that are unique to the horse.
Please consider funding a graduate student by providing a fellowship for a motivated veterinarian who wants to become a clinician researcher. These individuals have graduated from veterinary school and are now interested in completing a clinical residency and Ph.D program. We must provide adequate salaries to attract and sustain these individuals, so your financial contribution will help us achieve this goal.
A salary of $30,000/year must be provided to each veterinarian during his or her Ph.D. studies. You can support this program by creating a 3-year named fellowship. The amount of your fellowship can range from $5,000 to the full amount. Graduate students are allowed to receive multiple fellowships, so your fellowship can be combined with others to support the student.
If you sponsor a fellowship, we will invite you to meet the graduate student and follow his or her progress throughout the program. We also suggest that you name the fellowship, so that others will recognize your contribution to our graduate student training program. This will demonstrate that individuals care about the welfare of horses and recognize the need for more equine research at the University of Tennessee.
Thank you for taking the time to read about the graduate student fellowship program. Please contact the UTCVM Development Office at 865.974.4379 or celdridge@utk.edu if you would like to discuss this program.
Sincerely,
Nicholas Frank, DVM, PhD, DACVIM
Director, Center for Equine Veterinary Research
