The purpose of the field service section is to give students practical on-the-farm veterinary training in Large Animal Medicine, both food animal and equine. By fulfilling this purpose, Tennessee livestock and horse owners that utilize the field service section should receive great benefit from the section members' latest knowledge on a condition or disease, expertise, and the section's latest technology.
The range of the field service section in 35 miles from the school for routine farm calls. However, for problems herds in which local veterinarians request diagnostic or treatment consultations, the field service section will travel anywhere reasonable. Although routine food animal and equine farm calls constitute the majority of our calls, the field service section is available to assist practicing veterinarians in the field with problem situations. This assistance may require an on-site visit by one of our specialists.
The field service section is also the primary veterinary service for the state prison system farms (TRICOR) and several of the University of Tennessee Experiment Station farms. In fulfilling this mission, section members
often travel over the entire state of Tennessee.
The farm visits are usually made by one faculty member accompanied by two or three, fourth year students. The faculty member usually takes the lead in the case work-up or treatments with the student assisting. As the students gain experience and become more comfortable with routine procedures, they may assume a more prominent role in case management.
