UTCVM Gastrointestinal Surgery
Equine surgeons at the University of Tennessee regularly perform emergency or elective gastrointestinal surgery on horses affected by colic. Personnel are available 24/7 to attend to emergencies. Our operating theater is equipped with sophisticated monitoring equipment to minimize the risk associated with emergency abdominal surgery. Intestinal stapling equipment helps the surgeons to finish the procedure rapidly, which decreases the risks associated with prolonged anesthesia. Horses undergoing colic surgery are monitored continuously, while hospitalized, by our dedicated staff.
