The Small Animal Internal Medicine section at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine is comprised of 15 Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine and 4 medicine residents. All of the Diplomates practice general internal medicine, but each has sub-specialty expertise in specific areas such as ..

Other specialists in cardiology, oncology, ophthalmology, and dermatology are part of the medicine section and have separate description elsewhere on this web site.

Approximately 100% of the patients seen by the Medicine Service are by referral. Our teaching hospital has active clinical support services in clinical pathology, pathology, pharmacology, bacteriology, virology, immunology, toxicology, endocrinology, and parasitology. Specialized facilities for in-depth work-up and therapy include: color-flow Doppler ultrasonography; cystoscopy and laparoscopy; YAG and CO2 laser units; full-range neuro-electrodiagnostic laboratory including EEG, EMG, ERG, brain-stem and auditory evoked potentials, cystometrography and urethral pressure profile; diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine and radiation therapy; computed tomography; balloon dilation manometry; lithotripsy; laprascopscopy; and endoscopy.

A large and diversified caseload provides an excellent clinical environment for teaching students, interns, and residents internal medicine. Teaching is a priority with active participation of faculty in clinics. Objectives of the medicine residency training program are to train specialists in internal medicine and to prepare them for board certification. These objectives are achieved through close guidance by senior faculty in advanced clinical medicine, daily group rounds and formal training sessions, seminars and journal discussions.
