Residency/Graduate Training in Pathology: Our program has an established record of preparing individuals for successful careers in academic and diagnostic pathology as well as contemporary biomedical research. An initial 2-year residency appointment develops morphologic and diagnostic pathology skills and imparts a fundamental understanding of disease processes. Depending on interest and performance, a third year of advanced residency, leading to ACVP board eligibility, is available. Case material comes from our active internal and referral necropsy and surgical pathology services. The training faculty currently includes 5 ACVP anatomic pathologists and 2 ACVP clinical pathologists.
Opportunities for advanced biomedical research training leading to a Ph.D. degree are also available through the University of Tennessee’s interdisciplinary Comparative and Experimental Medicine Graduate Program. This intercollegiate program includes personnel and support facilities from the Department of Pathobiology, Department of Life Sciences, the College of Veterinary Medicine, the Graduate School of Medicine, and the Oak Ridge National Laboratories. Active research efforts are ongoing in the areas of carcinogenesis, experimental therapeutics, epidemiology, molecular genetics and disease, protein-folding diseases, imaging, virology, and cellular immunopathology.
Candidates must hold a professional degree in veterinary medicine, have a strong academic record and evidence of an interest in and commitment to pathology. Starting salary is $24,000 and the benefits package is competitive. A more detailed description of the training program, as well as the faculty and their research interests is available upon request.
