Dog Bites One Year Old

A one year old is rushed to the hospital after being bitten by a great dane. It happened in Murray County on Monday. That's when Amber Plott says their new dog bit their 19 month old little girl. Plott says he's a good dog that didn't mean to hurt her, but she wandered too close to his food at the wrong time. Now the dog is being examined as little Caydense recovers. Plott says, "It was pretty scary, she was calmer than what I thought, but it was very scary." She tells us they'd gotten a dog, a 4 year great dane the day before. On Monday when she turned to get the door, he brutally bit her baby. "Set the food bowl wasn't thinking, to answer the door because we had a delivery, just in a second." Most cases of dogs biting children could have been prevented by educating kids to read warning signs, says a Regina-based vet. Dr. Sally Cleland was in Saskatoon on Saturday to deliver a lecture on dog bite prevention for the fifth annual Animal Welfare Conference held by the Saskatchewan SPCA. Dog bites can be caused by a range of factors, including predatory instincts, past abuse and, sometimes, simple miscommunication between dogs and people, said Cleland. Wanting a sucker, dog bites girl

LEXINGTON A dog bit a 4-year-old girl Sunday because he was trying to get to a sucker that was in the girl's mouth. No charges have been filed in the incident, which happened in the 300 block of Spring Drive. The girl, who was not identified, was treated at Brenner Children's Hospital in Winston-Salem for bite wounds on her face. Her condition was unavailable Monday. According to the Davidson County Sheriff's Office, the girl had a sucker in her mouth, and the dog jumped on her and knocked her down to get it. The dog's owner ... (more)

The Smith's son, Alexander James, whom they call "AJ," remains in critical, but stable condition at the University of Kentucky Hospital after his ordeal. Born three weeks premature, the Smiths brought AJ home on Sunday afternoon. He was just four days old when Dakota, the family's 65-pound female Native American Indian dog, nabbed him while he slept. AJ suffered a skull fracture, collapsed lungs, broken ribs and a hole in his side. (Thankfully Baby AJ survived his unfortunate run-in with the family pet, unlike Shaiunna Hare, the two-year-old girl that was strangled to death by her mom's boyfriend's pet Burmese python earlier this month.) Protect kids from dog bites

Every year in the United States, 3.5 million children are bitten by dogs, and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is estimated that by age 12, half of all children in this country will have experienced a dog bite. Children under the age of seven are especially vulnerable and are most likely to experience more severe injuries to their head, neck and face when bitten by a dog. In light of the recent and very unfortunate baby A.J. incident, I spoke with American Humane's director of Humane Education, Jane Greco Deming, to learn some simple steps parents can take to protect their children as well as what parents can teach their children about dogs so they can avoid being bitten. Baby critically injured after being dragged by family dog

Earlier this week, A.J. Smith, a newborn baby was dragged out of his crib and into the woods behind his home by the family dog, Dakota. A.J. was critically injured and is still hospitalized but is expected to recover. An afternoon jog along Barrie's lakeshore turned ugly for a Barrie teen earlier this week when his leg was bitten by a dog.
