Dogs Needed for Clinical Geriatric Study

Researchers at the University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine are seeking participants for a clinical study evaluating an "anti-aging" supplement in geriatric dogs.

  • Dogs must be at least 7 years of age

  • Have no major health problems or behavioral problems (such as aggression)

  • They must consistently show at least one of the following: 

    • disorientation or confusion

    • decreased responsiveness

    • irregular sleep patterns

    • decreased activity

    • decreased interactions with family members or other pets, or loss of house-training

For inclusion into the study, they must not have received the following medications in the 14 days prior to enrollment: 

  • glucocorticoids

  • fatty acid supplements

  • vitamins C and/or E, S-adenosyl-methionine (SAMe)

  • fish oils

  • PetTabs®

  • Dermcaps®

  • Cosequin®. 

THE STUDY: 

  • The study involves collecting blood samples and other non-invasive testing at entry into the study, at 2 months, and at 6 months. 

  • Dogs will receive either the supplement or a placebo. 

  • All testing including a geriatric health screen will be paid for by the study and dogs that successfully complete the 6-month study period will receive 6 months' of the supplement at no charge

  • Owners will receive $150 for participation from the sponsoring company.
