Video Produced by Veterinary College Wins at Media Festival
July 25, 2006
KNOXVILLE – The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine has won
the 2006 Milton E. Adsit Excellence in Veterinary Medical Media Award at the
32nd Annual Health Science Communication Association’s (HeSCA) Media Festival.
The Festival is an international forum for health sciences media, and its goal
is to showcase individuals and organizations whose works represent the very best
in health sciences media production.
Babbet Harbison and Aaron Killian produced the winning video entry, Smoky’s
Story: Four Pounds of Courage. The video documentary is part of a display in the
waiting area of the W.W. Armistead Veterinary Teaching Hospital on UT’s campus.
The display honors Smoky, the first therapy dog on record and chronicles the
history and accomplishments of the dog and her trainer Bill Wynne during World
War II. While recognizing and honoring service dogs, the video also increases
awareness of the advantages of the human-animal bond.
The award was presented at the 2006 HeSCA Annual Meeting in Washington, DC. The
video plays on the Client Education Center in the waiting area of the veterinary
hospital and is well received by many who marvel at the many tricks Smoky
performed for injured soldiers.
