Original UTCVM Faculty Member Passes Away
(Knoxville, TN. June 7, 2011)-- Dr. Jack Oliver, original UTCVM faculty member, passed away at Vanderbilt University Medical Center Sunday. Family will receive friends from 5-7pm Thursday, June 9 at Maryville First United Methodist Church. Details can be found here.
A quiet, kind man with a wonderful laugh, Dr. Oliver has been called a great citizen for the Department of Comparative Medicine and for the entire college. He coordinated and taught the veterinary pharmacology courses in the college's professional curriculum since the beginning of the college and also developed and directed the Clinical Endocrinology Service in the Department of Comparative Medicine, nurturing it into the veterinary medical center's busiest diagnostic laboratory that receives samples from around the world. A couple in Washington, DC created Emma's Memorial Fund for Endocrinology Research at the college when they learned their vet had sent samples to UT, and it was Dr. Oliver's lab that conducted tests and provided a diagnosis.
Ted Kerasote, best-selling author of Merles Door: Lessons from a Freethinking Dog, interviewed Dr. Oliver about endocrine dysfunction for an upcoming book. Kerasote said, "Jack was one of the most pleasant, hospitable, and informative individuals I met while doing research for my book."
Memorial gifts may be made to UTCVM desginated for Endocrinology Research or First United Methodist Church, 804 Montvale Station Road, Maryville.
Dr. Oliver will be greatly missed by the college, the community, and the veterinary profession.
