Research Symposium Call for Abstracts

(Knoxville, TN) -- Cancer, heart disease, E-coli, wildlife diseases, insulin resistance: just a few of the research projects presented at the 2008 Comparative and Experimental Medicine (CEM) research symposium at the University of Tennessee. Since the CEMs inaugural symposium two years ago, participation has quadrupled, and symposium organizers expect this year to be no different. CEM has joined forces with the UT Center for Public Health to offer the Comparative and Experimental Medicine and Public Health Research Symposium (CEMPHRS) June 15-16, 2009, on the UT agricultural campus. The symposium focuses on the broad area of human or animal health.

The public health portion of the symposium (June 15) will include faculty and graduate student panel discussions and presentations. The symposium will begin with a kick-off address focused on Omega 3-fatty acids and heart disease by Dr. William S. Harris, Senior Scientist and Director of the Metabolism and Nutrition Research Center, Sanford School of Medicine, University of South Dakota. CEM sessions will be held primarily on June 16 and will feature meeting-format scientific presentations by graduate students, post-docs, residents, and research assistant professors. As the keynote speaker for the CEM portion of the symposium, Dr. Hildegard Schuller will present "Nicotine addiction and cancer."  Dr. Schuller is an established, NIH-funded investigator whose research focuses on the role of neurotransmitter receptors in tobacco-associated cancer. Before joining the University of Tennessees (UT) Pathobiology Department as a professor in 1985, she held several different positions at the National Cancer Institute in Frederick and Bethesda, MD. Dr. Schuller has a total of 223 peer-reviewed publications (and counting) and was promoted to distinguished professor at UT in 1994. Since 2001, Dr. Schuller has brought in over $5 million in extramural research support for UT.

An optional poster session is planned for Tues., June 16. The symposium Web site will be continuously updated as abstracts are accumulated and the event approaches.

CEMPHRS is sponsored by the College of Veterinary Medicine (UTCVM), the Center for Public Health, AgResearch, the Graduate School, the Graduate School of Medicine and the UTK Office of Research. Attendance is free, and interested students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to attend the numerous sessions and keynote addresses. For more information, contact Dr. Buddy Moore at the UTCVM  or Dr. Paul Erwin at the UT Center for Public Health.
