Swizzle the Alpaca Sizzles

FT Swizzle the Alpaca Cria was treated at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center in Knoxville

(Knoxville, TN.  April 4, 2014)-- FT Swizzle made his grand entrance into this world June 19, 2013 as a healthy 18 pound, 6 ounce Alpaca cria.  A few days following his birth, he was attacked by an animal and received several bites around his tail and back legs.

Owners Susan and Peter Goodwin brought Swizzle and his mom, Keely, to the Large Animal Hospital at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Medical Center.  His wounds had become infected and could be life-threatening. Susan says under the direction of UT Large Animal Department Head Dr. David Anderson, the students and staff worked a miracle, and the two alpacas returned home within a week. "Swizzle is a beautiful juvenile male and very friendly due to the handling he received while recovering," Susan says. "We are very thankful to Dr. Anderson and the UT Large Animal Hospital for saving Swizzle."

Eight months after his birth, injury and recovery, Swizzle competed in his first alpaca show at the Carolina Alpaca Challenge and took first place. He claimed his second blue ribbon in March at the Southern Select Alpaca Show in Sevierville, Tennessee.

According to Susan, "Swizzle has a promising show career and future herd sire for our farm, Fosters Trail & Alpaca Farm. Dr. Anderson and the UT Large Animal Hospital are the best!"
