F.A.Q.s (Frequently Asked Questions)
About attending the annual UTCVM Open House event
Who may attend?
The annual event is open to the general public and is a great activity for the entire family. Food is available on site.
May we bring our pets?
No. We request for the safety of your pets and our patients that you do not bring your pets.
May our large group attend?
For large groups, we request chaperones of 1 adult for every 10 children. Please call in advance with the name of your group, the number in attendance and estimated time of arrival so we may provide you with an enjoyable experience.
We request the following information when you call:
- the names of the group,
- the contact person with email address and cell phone number,
- and estimated time of arrival.
How much time should we plan to spend for the Open House Tour?
As the UT Veterinary Medical Center has grown we have separated the OPEN HOUSE into two tours. One tour for the LARGE ANIMAL portion begins at the Equine Rehabilitation Arena. The SMALL ANIMAL portion begins at the usual starting point in Lot 65 parking area outside the UTCVM brick foyer. Start to finish, each portion of the self-guided tour can take between 1.5 to 2 hours if you stop at every point along the way. If you want to do both tours this allows you time to take a rest or lunch break.
We have people visiting with special needs; will you have wheelchairs available in case they get tired?
Since we are an animal hospital, we do not have access to human-assistive devices. Handicap parking is available.
Please call prior to the event so we may forward information to our students working TRAFFIC so we may assist you to the appropriate parking site. You may leave a message at (865) 974-0989 with your name, make of car and estimated time of arrival.
Where do we park when we arrive on the agricultural campus at the University?
When you arrive on the agricultural campus, follow the signs. Our students working TRAFFIC, wearing brightly colored shirts, will be stationed along the road and will assist you with directions on-site. ENTER through the main entrance of the UTIA Campus- Joe Johnson Drive. Please refer to the tour map and schedule of special events.
Will there be maps and listing of special events as handouts? In the spirit of “Going GREEN”, signs will be posted at various places along the self-guided tour showing locations and event times. Students wearing an “ASK me” button will be along the route to direct you to the next exhibit and to answer your questions.
What kind of strange animals will I see?
We plan to have reptiles, parrots and small mammal to view, but for the truly exotic, plan a visit to our nearby Knoxville Zoo. Their website is: www.knoxvillezoo.org
Can we adopt animals from rescue groups at the UT Open House?
No. Open House is a great place to ask questions and learn about different kinds of animals and what animal may fit in well with your family.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR VISIT!
Visitors are welcome from 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM.
