NECROPSY SERVICE

Necropsies can be performed on the patients of referring veterinarians with gross and microscopic findings reported in 2-6 weeks.

Small Domestic Animals (cats, dogs) and Exotic Species
Routine Diagnostic Cases $120
  • Includes gross, limited histologic exam, some ancillary lab tests, routine carcass disposal
  • Does not include toxicology, laboratory tests for infectious disease outbreak (litter, etc), rabies tests, or radiology fees
  • Litter or household problem w/ multiple animals included in submission charged at discretion of pathologist
  • Cosmetic necropsy not available
  • No remains will be released to owners after necropsy of referral cases, due to potential exposure to biohazards either from that case or others in the laboratory environment
Individual Cremation, Save Ashes $25
  • Handling fee: Owners responsible for all cremation arrangements and fees
  • Whole body cremation not available for large (i.e. > 200 lb) animal - Service will collect head, heart and hoof/foot for cremation

Insurance/Potential Legal Action ≤ $350*
This fee is at discretion of duty pathologist

Horses
Routine Diagnostic Cases $150

  • Does not include disposal or any other tests/procedures
  • Cosmetic necropsies are not available

Cattle
No charge

In an effort to enhance the state’s surveillance for all cattle diseases, ALL necropsy charges for Tennessee Domestic Cattle submissions (includes placenta) are covered by Tennessee Dept. of Agriculture as of January 1, 2006 - No charges to referral clinic or owner; please use separate submission for available below.
(Contract does not include biopsy or “necropsy in a bottle” - these are charged as routine biopsy submissions)

Production/Farm Animals (Small Ruminants, Chickens, etc)
Zoo & Wildlife (Deer, etc)

Routine Diagnostic Cases $60

  • Includes gross and limited histologic exam.
    Covers up to 3 submissions per day if < 200 lb - each additional submissions and all larger animals = $60 each
  • Does not include any ancillary laboratory tests (i.e. microbiology) - these are charged at our cost
  • Cosmetic necropsy not available

Large Exotics (>500 lb) $150

Insurance/Potential Legal Action ≤ $350*
This fee is at discretion of duty pathologist

Disposal Charges

Stericycle (Stericycle processing required for entire sheep & goat heads)

< 50 lb animals $25
> 50 lb animals $50 (Plus Stericycle cost recovery $1.05/lb )
Cremation $25

o Handling fee added to disposal charges
o Owner responsible for arranging cremation, carcass/ashes pickup, and cremation fees
o Not available for entire large animals - Service will save head, heart, one hoof for cremation

* Extensive histologic exam, hold liver/kidney at least 3 months, digital photography of carcass for ID and significant lesions

BIOPSY SERVICE

Histopathologic descriptions and interpretations of biopsies submitted by referring veterinarians are typically reported 72 hours after submission.

Biopsy (all submissions, regardless of size or number of samples): $38

  • Single fee includes decalcification, multiple samples, large samples, 2nd opinions, "special stains" (histochemistry, not immunohistochemistry)

"STAT" Biopsy: + $25

  • Results may be relayed by phone call, FAX and/or E-mail; final report may not be expedited

“Stat” cases will be examined the day slides are produced by our Histology Laboratory and results will be relayed within 8 hours, either as a phone call, E-mail or FAX’ed report (the final written report may not be expedited). This should reduce our turn around by at least 24 hours compared to routine biopsy submissions.

Charges for staining done at other Laboratories (send outs to Pennsylvania, UC Davis) may differ.
