Clinical Pathology Individual Test Instructions -- for local referring veterinarians

Cytology Smear

• Label all slides with the patient’s name.

• Complete request form and provide all sample/patient information and as much history as necessary for accurate evaluation.

• Don’t forget to indicate the site.

Centesis Fluid Analysis

• Submit specimen in a lavender top collection tube

• Label with the patient’s name.

• DO NOT SUBMIT SAMPLES FOR FLUID ANALYSIS IN SYRINGES.

• If samples are left at night or on weekends, please include a slide.

• Leave all slides in a plastic bag with a completed form, and place fluid in refrigerator.

• Please include all sample/patient information, and history.

• Be sure to indicate from which body cavity the specimen was taken.

 

CBC

• Submit specimen in a lavender top collection tube.

• Label all specimens with the patient’s name & complete a request form.

• Include a smear with the request, and leave the request and the smear in a plastic bag in the area designated for clinical pathology samples.

• Refrigerate the lavender top collection tube.


Coagulation Profile

• Submit specimen in a blue top collection tube.

• Label all specimens and complete a request form.

• Call the laboratory to announce the arrival of the specimen.

• Place sample and request form in a plastic bag and place in the refrigerator.

• Test must be run within 2 hours of draw.

• If you cannot get the sample to us within 15 minutes of draw, separate the plasma from the cells using a PLASTIC PIPET, place in a PLASTIC tube and freeze plasma.

 

Chemistry

• Submit specimen in a green or red top collection tube.

• Label all specimens with the patient’s name and complete a request form.

• Place sample and request form in a plastic bag and leave in the refrigerator.

 

Urine

• Submit specimen in a red top collection tube.

• Label with the patient’s name and complete a request form.

• Place urine sample and request in a plastic bag and leave in the refrigerator.

• Pack carefully according to shipper’s instructions to prevent breakage.

 

Centesis Fluid Analysis

• Submit specimen in a lavender top collection tube

• Label with the patient’s name.

• DO NOT SUBMIT SAMPLES FOR FLUID ANALYSIS IN SYRINGES.

• Ship sample on an ice pack according to shipper’s instruction.

• Include a completed a request form.

• Keep any smears you might include as far away from the ice pack as possible.

• Label all specimens.

 

CBC

• Submit specimen in a lavender top collection tube.

• Label all specimens with the patient’s name and complete a request form.

• Include a smear if possible.

• Ship sample on an ice pack according to shipper’s instructions.

• Include a completed a request form.

• Keep smears as far away from the ice pack as possible.

 

Chemistry

• Submit specimen in a green or red top collection tube.

• Separate serum/plasma from cells and label all specimens with the patient’s name.

• Pack with a competed request form and specimen on an ice pack according to shipper’s instructions.

 

Urinalysis

• Submit specimen in a red top collection tube.

• Label the specimen with the patient’s name and complete a request form.

• Pack completed request form and specimen on an ice pack according to shipper’s instructions.
