Horses have always been prominent in Tennessee's rich history. Horse power was once crucial to agricultural success and still remains an important economic entity in Tennessee. Their popularity is now founded in sport and in a wide array of recreational activities. The full extent of the economic and social importance of horses in Tennessee is only now being appreciated. Tennessee's horse industry, estimated at more than $290 million, ranks near the top among animal industries in the state. In addition, a significant economic impact of the equine industry is on suppliers of agricultural products. The greatest impact, however, is the value of horses to their owners. The health of the horse is just a+s important to the industry as it is to the individual horse owner.

Why is Research Important?

The investigation of new ideas, is important because it provides answers to problems, both old and new. Research is the foundation of equine health practices now and in the future. It is through research that the normal physiology of the horse becomes better understood, and that new detection methods and treatments for diseases are discovered. Through research, doors are constantly opened to improve horse health care.

What is TEVRO?

TEVRO (Tennessee Equine Veterinary Research Organization) is an integral part of the UT College of Veterinary Medicine's Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences. It is an organization involved in developing new methods for optimal care of the horse. TEVRO is a nonprofit fund established to finance equine research at the UT College of Veterinary Medicine. Because funds for equine research are often not available through government or institutional agencies, equine research must primarily be supported by the horse industry itself. Projects funded by TEVRO are made possible by private donations.

How can you help?

A tax deductible donation to TEVRO will enable continued progress in the field of equine health care. Only through your support and dedication to the future health of the horse can TEVRO continue to search for answers to improve the health and management of horses. Your gift benefits not only today's horse population, but is also an investment in the future of the horse industry. No donation is too small.
