The Veterinary Social Work Summit is the first of its kind to provide an opportunity for veterinary social workers from across the world to come together to educate and be educated, to network and be connected, and to strengthen and solidify this new sub-specialty of social work practice.
Sponsored by both Colleges of Social Work and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Tennessee, this Summit will have expert presenters on the four practice areas of veterinary social work:
- The Link between Human and Animal Violence
- Animal Assisted Interventions
- Grief and Bereavement
- Compassion Fatigue
Other topics also included will be “diversity” as it relates to animal ownership and animal related professionals, “spirituality, social work, and the human-animal bond,” and “mediation/communication as an important tool of the veterinary social worker.” Additionally, there will be an international panel and evening dinner discussion on the human- animal bond across nations.
Veterinary Social Work practice areas represented at the Summit will be academic, animal shelter, and private social work and/or veterinary practice settings. Applications of micro and macro vet social work practice will be examined and presented throughout Summit offerings, including clinical interventions and policy advocacy.
Knowing there are many experts in the field, and wanting to provide opportunity for all participants to present and see different models and methods for veterinary social work, participants are encouraged to request space for poster presentations. Posters should not exceed 3’X4.’ Participants who would like to present a poster should send a poster description not to exceed 300 words to Dr. Elizabeth B. Strand, LCSW.
