Dear School Counselor:
The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine is currently accepting applications for the 2015 Veterinary Summer Experience Program. The program will take place June 1 – July 17, 2015. Since its establishment in 1993, this program has been successful, in large part, due to the efforts of veterinarians and school counselors who help us identify potential applicants. Your assistance is especially needed as we wish to recruit students from various ethnic, cultural, and social backgrounds.
The program seeks to provide worthwhile opportunities for students interested in veterinary medicine while simultaneously generating a pool of potential veterinary students. To this end, the program has been designed to provide valuable educational experiences and acquaint students with all facets of veterinary medicine. Students will work in a veterinary practice in their hometown for six weeks and then spend one week in Knoxville as guests of the veterinary college. While in Knoxville, students will be involved in various educational programs including lectures, laboratories, and clinical rotations. Participants will be employees of The University of Tennessee and will receive compensation. There is no cost to students to participate in this program. Last year we received over 150 applications for 12 available positions, so program admission is very competitive.
To apply, a student must:
- Be a legal resident of the State of Tennessee and be enrolled in a Tennessee high school or home schooled
- Be a current high school junior or senior at the time of application submission
- Be at least sixteen years of age by June 1, 2015
- Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average
- Be available for full time employment (40 hours per week) between June 1 - July 17, 2015
- Have not previously participated in the Veterinary Summer Experience Program
No exceptions will be made to the eligibility requirements listed above. Students not meeting all of the stated requirements should not apply. All applicants must submit an application, an official high school transcript, and three reference letters. Please make sure that the applicant's cumulative GPA is clearly indicated on their transcript. Applications must be electronically submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on March 13, 2015. Supplemental materials must be postmarked by March 14, 2015. All applicants will be notified of their status via email on or before April 30.
