The Veterinary Public Health Concentration -- Concentration Courses

The Veterinary Public Health (VPH) concentration courses are divided into Required Courses and Elective Courses.

REQUIRED (7 hours)

  1. Food Hygiene and Zoonoses (VM837/CEM610)
    2 hours
    • VM837 is a required course in the veterinary curriculum.
    • Students who are not enrolled in the professional curriculum would take this course under CEM610 – Advanced topics: Food Hygiene and Zoonoses
  2. Emerging Infectious Diseases Journal Club (CEM611)
    2 hours
    • This course must be taken twice for a total of 2 hours.
    • It meets during the noon hour one day a week (day TBA) of Fall and Spring semesters and may be offered during summer as well.
    • Contact Dr. Melissa Kennedy for details
  3. Principles and Practices of Community Health Education (PH550)
    3 hours
    • PH550 usually meets Tuesday and Thursday afternoons during Fall semester
    • Students must be accepted in the MPH Program in order to enroll in PH550.

ELECTIVES (VPH Concentration) (12 hours)

The MPH program offers preparation for professional practice in careers related to improving community health. The public health major addresses the five specialty areas of public health and emphasizes a population-based perspective. In addition to required courses stipulated by the MPH curriculum and the concentration of study, ten hours of electives provide flexibility for the individual.

Electives must be selected in consultation with one’s academic advisor. Discussion should explore personal career objectives (3-5 years after graduation) and perceived deficiencies in knowledge or skills which need attention. Course exposure should be selected which will address career aspirations, not merely those which may be scheduled conveniently. Anticipate that fewer courses are offered during summer terms. A graduate minor in statistics (9 hours) may be of interest. Descriptive information regarding the statistics minor is available separately.

For guidance, a listing of suggested course electives has been assembled based on faculty review of courses. If students find a course of potential interest which is not on the listing, approval must be obtained from the academic advisor prior to enrollment. Limited opportunities for “directed independent study” in cooperation with a faculty member may be possible
