Other Training
- National Animal Health Emergency Response Corps (NAHERC)
In 2001, APHIS established the National Animal Health Emergency Response Corps
(NAHERC) to respond to exotic disease outbreaks and other disasters that affect livestock,
poultry, companion animals, and wildlife. More student volunteers are urgently needed
to assure a decisive response to any potential animal health crises.
Over the past several years, NAHERC student volunteers have assisted with the foot-and mouth
disease eradication effort in the United Kingdom, the outbreak of low-pathogenic avian
influenza in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, and the exotic Newcastle disease response
in southern California. As a NAHERC student volunteer, you will experience the rewards of
serving your country by helping protect our communities and the U.S. food supply.
Attached is a brochure with the procedure to sign up to be a volunteer.

International Animal Production, Disease Surveillance & Public Health: Study Abroad in Uganda
We live in an increasingly global world that is becoming more economically, socially, politically, culturally and scientifically integrated. In the advent of globalization, we are faced with new challenges including spread of animal and human pandemics.
One way to confront these threats is to adjust curricula in a way that will promote globalization of research and career opportunities. In line with this, the Department of Veterinary & Microbiological Sciences at North Dakota State University, in conjunction with the Department of Veterinary Public Health & Preventive Medicine, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda, have developed this course designed to facilitate diversity in student training and exposure.
The course will contribute to producing a broadly inclusive, open minded, world class, and globally engaged science work force. Studying international animal production, food safety and public health systems will provide a foundation for tomorrow's global citizens. This program also provides shared opportunities through collaborative research and/or fieldwork in Uganda and the United States in areas of mutual interest.
