UTCVM Reconstructive Surgery
The University of Tennessee’s Veterinary Hospital routinely performs reconstructive surgery on body wall defects, such as umbilical hernias, scrotal hernias, and hernias associated with previous abdominal surgeries. Simple procedures, such as umbilical hernia repair, are performed on an outpatient basis. Horses undergoing more extensive procedures, such as those involving implantation of mesh to repair the defect in the body wall, are hospitalized for post-operative treatment and monitoring. Treatment of chronic or non-healing wounds using split- or full-thickness skin grafts is regularly performed by our surgeons; one of them is an internationally recognized expert of the field.
