The anesthesia service is comprised of two board-certified Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists and veterinary technicians. One anesthesiologist is assigned to clinical service on a rotational basis. Senior veterinary students rotate through the anesthesia service as a part of their clinical training. The anesthesia service is responsible for anesthetizing approximately 2,400 small animal patients each year. Two of the anesthesiologists are also board-certified Diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care. The anesthesiologist on clinical duty is in charge of the Small Animal Intensive Care Unit. The unit is staffed full-time by certified veterinary technicians. Senior veterinary students assigned to the anesthesia service assist in the unit as part of their training. Approximately 1,000 small animal patients are admitted to the intensive care unit each year. A residency program in emergency medicine and critical care is part of the service.
