Laser Lithotripsy
Laser lithotripsy is a technique used to fragment urinary bladder stones. A Holmium/YAG laser is used to fracture all stone types. The Laser is used on bladder stones specifically when the stones are too large to remove through the urethra whole. This is a technique that makes minimally invasive bladder stone removal possible, even on larger stones. The laser is a safe and effective device.
The Holmium/YAG laser is also capable of excising and coagulating soft tissue. We use this capability with tunneling ectopic ureters. The laser fiber is passed through the cystoscope and is used to cut away the extra tissue, eliminating the problem.
