May is National Stroke Awareness Month
(Knoxville, TN) -- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Population (CDC), stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Each year, about 795,000 strokes occur in the United States. National Stroke Awareness month in May aims to increase public awareness of life-saving information.
In 2011, Dr. Agricola Odoi, an Associate Professor in the UTCVM Department of Biomedical and Diagnostic Sciences, published a study on differences of stroke and heart attack death rates in neighborhoods of East Tennessee. A previous study investigated disparities in geographic accessibility to emergency care for stroke and heart attack patients.
Knowing the warning signs of a stroke and getting help fast are crucial.
The CDC has compiled ways to reduce the chance of a stroke.
