Dear Counselor:
Below is information regarding The University of Tennessee College
of Veterinary Medicine’s 2008 Veterinary Summer Experience of High School
Students. Prior to 2007, the program was open only to African-American high
school students, but last year all students interested in veterinary
medicine were encouraged to apply. We again encourage applications from all interested students. Since its establishment in 1993, this
program has been successful, in large part, due to the efforts of
veterinarians and school counselors who help us identify potential
applicants. Your assistance is especially needed as we wish to recruit students from various
ethnic, cultural, and social backgrounds.
The program seeks to provide worthwhile opportunities for students
interested in veterinary medicine while simultaneously generating a pool of
potential veterinary students. To this end, the program has been designed to
provide valuable educational experiences and acquaint students with all
facets of our exciting profession. Students will work in local veterinary
practices for seven weeks and then spend one week in Knoxville as guests of
the veterinary college. While here, they will be involved in various
educational programs including lectures, laboratories, and clinical
rotations. Students will be employees of The University of Tennessee and
will receive compensation.
To apply, a student must:
- Be a legal resident of the State of Tennessee and enrolled in a Tennessee high
school.
- Be at least sixteen years of age by June 9, 2008.
- Have completed tenth grade by June 9, 2008.
- Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average
- Be available for full time employment between June 9 – August 1, 2008.
- Have not previously participated in the Veterinary Summer Experience Program.
All applicants must submit a completed application, an essay, an official transcript, and three reference letters.
For consideration, completed application packets must be postmarked by
March 31, 2008. The program will take place June 9- August 1, 2008. We solicit and
appreciate your help in identifying interested students. Further information and application materials may be obtained on our
web site at www.vet.utk.edu/summerexperience.
